The Princess and the Pea
Far, far away in a country old A prince wished to marry a Princess, we're told So he searched near and far, but alas could not find A suitable bride like his folks had in mind. He searched and searched 'til his spirits grew low To find a true Princess, where could he go? And then one night came a terrible storm And a Princess seeking shelter...a place to stay warm. She was welcomed within, though her looks did deceive She looked not like a Princess, so the Queen believed But the Prince fell in love and was swept from his feet His true love he'd found to make life complete. Then a test was devised for the Queen to affirm If this truly were a Princess who'd come in from the storm. She'd hide a small pea on the bed's bottom board And top it with mattresses...twenty to be sure. For only a Princess would be able to detect A bump in her bed, and no pea she'd suspect. So they all bid good-night and soon the sun dawned "Did you sleep well?" asked the Queen..."No, I didn't" she yawned. I tossed and I turned and I could not snooze Something hard in my bed has caused me to bruise. "Ah ha!" roared the Prince to his Mother with pride "She is a true Princess and she'll soon be my bride." And so we learn what a fool is he Who thinks that a Princess wouldn't notice a pea. |
