Five Golden Rings/Six Geese A Laying

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is one of the oldest traditional carols, dating back to the 16th Century. From approximately 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not allowed to practice their faith without threat of death. During this time, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written by an unknown author as a memory aid song to help young Catholics learn the tenants of their faith. Each element in the carol is a code word, for instance, "my true love" represents God's love for us, and the "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person.
